Inspired extension to Edwardian house

The owners of this traditional Edwardian brick period home approached PRM with a view to adding an extension with a difference! In conjunction with our Architectural Designer and the owners, an extension and design concept was formulated which provided for a series of integrated pavilions including a 3 car garage over a substantial underground wine cellar.

The main section of the extension was designed to accommodate the owners cherished antique billiard table, whilst a new kitchen, bathrooms and two bedrooms were also added. By using a series of low pitched roofs, there is little impact on the south east facing back yard, and certainly no bulky feel when considered in context with the form of the original Edwardian house. The roof over the billiard area appears to float with no visible means of support, providing quite an engineering and construction challenge. By working closely with our Structural Engineer during the design process this seemingly difficult problem was easily solved, allowing the construction of a modern minimalist extension.

The heated polished concrete floor slab ensures that the living areas remain warm in winter despite the large expanse of glazing. The concrete slab also serves as a thermal mass in summer, helping to prevent heat build up inside the house. The house copes well with Melbourne’s climate.

PRM Constructions provided up to date costings as the design evolved. Therefore the owners knew the final price before committing to the building works. PRM also arranged all documentation and permits.
